Ruffle is a decorative frill of lace or gathered ornamentation of fabric, often used to trim or embellish the wrist or neck. A strip of fabric, when gathered or pleated, will create a frill that adds a ruffled line to a garment’s straight edge.

Ruffles have been a popular feature in fashion for centuries which might have originated from the Spanish Flamenco dress, as a representation of femininity. It is a traditional costume worn by female flamenco dancers and is characterized by its vibrant colors, ruffles, and flowing skirts. The ruffle trend was reintroduced by the Italian fashion house Blumarine in the early 2000s.

The Y2K era was the nickname for the decade following the year 2000. This name began in the late 90s, thanks to the increasing popularity of the internet and the worldwide technology boom.. It’s no surprise when the biggest fashion trends from decades past circle back with a fresh take. The early 2000s were very experimental, and with Gen Z and Millennials welcoming a nostalgia for the era, it was only a matter of time before the style returned.

Two decades later, 2000s trends have come back to the mainstream as well as Blumarine’s incorporation of the style in their Spring/Summer 2023 Milan Fashion Week–– reviving the trend for everyone to see.

Since the beginning of the Spanish Flamenco dress, it’s been reinterpreted by designers all over the world, including local designer Ushi Sato. Other brands have also caught up with the trend, such as the local made-to-order brand Miu the Label.

The ruffle dress is a fun and playful addition to any wardrobe, and it’s easy to see why so many stylish individuals are falling head over heels for this trend. Not only does it look adorable, but it’s also incredibly versatile. Dress it up with heels for a night out or pair it with sneakers for a cute and casual look. The ruffles add a playful touch to any outfit, and they’re the perfect way to show off your girly side. But the ruffle dress isn’t just for high-end designers.
