Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson had reason to be at the Golden Globes last night: Moana 2, the Disney box office smash in which he voiced the kindly strong man Maui, was nominated for best animated film. And with last night's ceremony often being seen as the warm-up act to the main headliner (the Oscars, if you weren't sure), everyone's keen to start strong. He didn't collect a gong. But he did prove the unique power of the Golden Globes red carpet.
As the first date on the awards calendar, this is the equivalent of everyone's first ‘back to work’ email after Christmas. Hollywood is feeling slightly more energised. They've had a lot of sleep. They've had a lot of time to prepare, too – and that usually results in looks that really show off before the mid-January fatigue sets in (and, unless you're tipped for best actor at the Academy Awards, that will likely hit by 3pm today so yes, do look forward to that).
And Johnson grabbed the red carpet with both hands, gave it an affectionate slap on the cheeks and told it to be ready for cocktails at 9, princess, because the former American GQ cover star went full Vegas penthouse baron. In a custom fit by Dolce & Gabbana, plain black dress trousers were amped up with a one-two punch of lilac up top. The shirt was silk, unbuttoned and deeply sexy, while the lighter jacket toed the dress code without falling into tuxedo territory. Which is fine! But if you're willing to stand out, do some colour and open a new restaurant at the Bellagio, there are far sexier ways to do the red carpet.
It gets better. There was a thin chain of diamonds. There was a pair of tinted rose shades too, because that's absolutely fine to do when it's 42 degrees at 3am. And, arguably, the most Hollywood thing of all is the diamond brooch. As something that's become a de facto calling card of the best-dressed guys, the last few major red carpets have seen a whole host of brooches that span everything from the delicate to the stunty (and make no mistake, Johnson's knot of gemstones and diamonds is proud to fall in the latter camp).
Moana 2 didn't take home the award. But crack open the champagne anyway, because Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson's fit is going to Vegas regardless.
